Beauty Big Bang Nail Foils ~ Application Tips and Tricks

We took my mother out to lunch today for her birthday, and as she calls it her annual margarita day. She has quite the history of enjoying a giant margarita, maybe even a bit too much, on her birthday. It really made her day since she still gets carded at 73. I don’t have the heart to break it to her that it’s the law! LOL

So how many times have you got frustrated with nail foils? See there are two types of people in this world; there are those who have never tried nail foils are there are those who have cursed their way through nail foils. But I’m pretty stoked because this time they actually turned out pretty good, and I’m going to share my tips with you.

Now let me start by saying that I am not a nail foil expert by any means. I have been through what feels like a dozen times trying to apply them to where I felt satisfied with the results. And this design is not particularly forgiving so being happy with the outcome was huge for me.

Directions to apply nail foils are as follows:

  1. Start by applying a similar colored polish to your nails and let it dry fully.
  2. Cut out a small amount just a bit larger than your nail.
  3. Apply a nail foil glue and let dry until it’s clear.
  4. Apply foil to nail and press firmly using an orange stick or cotton ball.
  5. Seal with a water based top coat.

So for these I started with 2 coats of a silver holo (ILNP Mega X). I tried a few times before getting these right so the big difference was using 2 coats of nail foil glue. Apparently regardless of how hard you try you can still miss areas with just a single coat. With 2 coats the foil transferred much better with very few areas that didn’t transfer completely, and only at the extreme edges. I have tried a number of different tools to do the actual transfer and the best combination I have found is your bare finger and a rubber/silicone cuticle pusher. I press firmly all around the nail with my bare finger, then I use the cuticle pusher to really get down around the edges. I did finish off with a water based top coat, and it seems like it still made it a bit wonky, but not near as much as a regular QDTC would. I imagine some water based top coats are better than others though so maybe another one would do better.
